Since Spruce began, we’ve received many furniture pieces produced by Knoll International in need of a face lift. This past month, we’ve worked on a Grasshopper chair and a set of four Platner chairs. See photos of Letty’s Platner chairs below.

In 1938, Knoll Associates was started by German Hans Knoll. The goal of Knoll was to create a line of modern, classic furniture to complement Mid Century Modern architecture. In 1943, Hans married Florence Schust who became the leader of the company in 1955 when Hans died. Under her direction, Knoll branched into interior design including a vast selection of fabrics. Today, Knoll is a major company with subsidiary branches all over the world. Some of the most famous designs and designers are represented by the Knoll label including Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair, Marcel Breuer’s Wassily chair, Eero Saarinen’s Tulip collection, and designs by Bertoia and Florence Knoll, to name a few.
Before I was familiar with Knoll brand, I thought all pieces by Knoll International were designed by Knoll (the person). Little did I know at the time that the company is full of designs by the most influential architects and furniture designers from the twentieth century.
