In January, one of my many fruitful encounters at Altitude Summit SLC was meeting a lovely lady from HGTV. Liz took our lampshade class and was so excited by her DIY experience, we decided to team up and produce original upholstery projects for the HGTV website. First up is this showstopping Geometric Door.
What I love most about this project is the optical illusion it creates, like little pyramids protruding from the surface, yet it’s completely flat. One of our suppliers stopped by when I was nearly finished with this and asked if I had padded the pyramids with foam! He was shocked to find a flat surface upon closer inspection.
I scored the solid wooden door at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore for $9 and gave it a light sanding and fresh coat of paint — good as new! Then I chose a faux leather in three shades of blue to map out my design. The final glitz was added with nearly 3,000 brass tacks, an easy but patience-building task!
Here are a few behind-the-scenes photos for ya!
On its way to Meredith’s house for install.
Chiseling out a notch for a third hinge. This door is heavy!
Clearing a hole for the doorknob.
