Sprucette Stories
Hey there Spruce fans. I thought that I would take a moment to show you what you are missing out on. Our classes are so much fun and will teach you a variety of skills that you can apply to other DIY projects. We just held yet another successful bench class this past Friday, and it was fantastic…as usual. These lovely ladies showed up with a bag of fabric and left with a piece of furniture in a matter of six hours.
If you are wondering where the dessert of the day is…well…it is a sad story. I made a beautiful chocolate meringue pie, but unfortunately, the ants got to it before we did. If you thought that would stop me, then you obviously do not know me. I scraped the bad bits off and pretended it didn’t happen. The pie was a bit too disfigured for photos.
Thank you to all the ladies that took the bench class on Friday. Clar and I had a great time. We hope to see you again in another class.
Exciting news, we have decided to add ANOTHER bench class in May! So many of you have requested more classes, so we squeezed an additional mini class of 3 students in for MAY 11th. Check your calendars and sign up online for this newly listed class, you’ll have a great time!
2 CommentsIn the last five years, gold has come back with a vengeance! You couldn’t pay me to have gold jewelry as a kid, so it’s always comical when your taste does a 180. Now, I can’t get enough of it. It is a perfect addition to any space. Gold has the unique distinction these days that it can go in so many directions. It can be luxurious or it can be simple. It can be progressive or it can be traditional. It can be loud or it can be subtle. The sky is the limit with this color! I find myself wanting to add a touch of gold to just about anything. I recently purchase some ho-hum planters for my new succulents. With a little gold and some painters tape, boom! Not so sad anymore. Check out how that turned out.
Gold has been incorporated in the oddest of places. Whether it’s paint or actual gold, people are putting it everywhere! Take a look at some of the places I have found gold used.
Gold has been around in fashion forever, so it is fun to see it have another heyday!
Now to the things we really love, interiors! I love the use of gold in conventional and unconventional ways. Take an Eames Chair for example. The frame has been gold-leafed, and now it creates an entirely different look than it had in it’s previous form. I have had my eye on the Dwell Studio magazine rack for some time now, need to win the lottery for that one ha! All of these pieces really nail it when it comes to the use of gold.
Then there is the knick-knack-paddywack. The stuff that really makes a home feel lived in. Gold is EVERYWHERE among these items. If you are not careful, gold can be a bit overwhelming, so these little touches of gold are the perfect place to incorporate the color.
Now that I have throughly mesmerized myself with all this gold, I need to go get me some! Hope you find a touch of gold to add to your home; I know it will do wonders.

This may sound too basic to really make a difference, but trust, try! You’ll see!
We recently bought a hand-stapler from Capital City Upholstery Supply. I’m finding it particularly handy to “baste” my fabric together before sewing. Of course, there’s the traditional pinning method below…
Or the other way with your brand new hand-stapler!
While sewing your seam you don’t have to worry about metal in your stitch path.
Large projects like over-sized cushions are more easily managed with the staple method. If you work with leather, I think this is a must-have. The staples can be placed in greater frequency so that your stretchy, slippery leather won’t budge. You can also use the hand stapler to secure a dacron/batting wrap on your foam cushion.
The staples are easily removed by hand or with any variety of puller/picker/ pry-er! Go get one. You’ll thank me later…you’re welcome!
We’ve completed yet another lampshade and chair class and as always we had a great time. The lampshade class was easy breezy laid back fun. The class wasn’t full so we all shared a table and chit chatted while making making lampshades. The special treat for that day was homemade banana pudding.
Last weekend’s chair class was a hoot. We had some characters in that class. The trio pictured in the opening photo kept everyone laughing. There was even a slight casualty of a staple through a finger. Don’t worry, She took it like a champ and kept on upholstering. I soothed the pain with a dose of tiramisu. It does the trick every time. Amongst all of the chaotic fun, everyone still managed to produce amazing chairs.
Spring is nearly here! It’s time to give your space a “fresher upper” with a bold new lampshade or an eye catching chair…or bench……or headboard. Take a gander at our class schedule for this spring/summer and sign up or get on a waiting list. It’s time that you treat yourself.
